What is Syndrome X?
Syndrome X also known as metabolic syndrome or insulin resistance syndrome. This syndrome is characterized by higher levels of cholesterol and high blood sugar levels. Although it is not seen as a disease, it is considered a group of risk factors. A few of these factors include:
- Sedentary lifestyle
- High carbohydrate diet
- High blood sugar
- Abnormal triglyceride levels
- Increased blood pressure
This is where we can start seeing early signs of heart disease. The same process that can give us diabetes, can put stress on our arteries and lead to other cardiovascular diseases. This branching point can lead us to increased cholesterol levels and a higher potential for diabetes.
Lab tests are one way that we can see some of the signs of Syndrome X. For example, the lab values for glucose may range from 100-127, even when fasting and you may see an increase in cholesterol or triglyceride levels.
